We assert that this is sound logic with regards to environmental impact, with the long range being of equal concern to the short range. A: Conservation : There is no other material or method more sustainable for building one's home other than earth. It has the lowest embodied energy and is the most renewable.

Adobes utilize abundant, non-polluting and non-toxic material, earth, while conserving limited resources water, top soil, trees, energy, etc. And when Arizona Adobe Company makes adobes on site, further energy is saved in transportation and pollution. Energy Efficient : Thermal Mass is an important part of an energy efficient building and is often left out of modern day construction projects.

Thermal Mass allows a building to store or share excess heat as needed, thereby averaging out temperature extremes. Coupled with passive solar design and orientation, an adobe home will provide energy savings one can bank on!

The reason is - it works! Affordable : Adobes are the lowest cost alternative for durable, energy-efficient structures.

Beautiful : Adobe buildings can be made to look like any kind of finished structure, however, most people who opt for this type of construction find they love the look of the block itself and the adobe look of a finish plaster.

Exteriors typically are given a weather-resistant skin that can be colored or left natural and interiors are plastered with a variety of mixtures or left exposed. Fire, Pest and Mold Resistant : Adobes are fire, sound and bug resistant.

Acoustic : Looking for quiet home? Earthen homes both diffuse sound reflection and effectively block sound form the outside or from room to room. Adobe homes will produce a tranquil internal environment quiet from the world outside, an often over-looked value.

A: No. A well-designed mix resists degradation and will remain durable for centuries. At any point, the building can be plastered to further enhance durability.

The adobe brick walls of an average size home at around square feet or square meters can be constructed within one month by a skilled 3-person team. A crew of 3 able bodies can produce around bricks in a given 8-hour day. This same crew can lay approximately bricks into a wall per day.

This same house with a simple floor plan would use around adobe bricks. A: Earth plasters also known as natural clay plasters are a blend of pure clays and aggregates with coloring agents that come from natural, non-toxic oxides and ochre mineral pigments. Earth plasters create stunning moods of their own; and they provide a beautiful backdrop for art or wall hangings as well.

A: Natural clay plasters are organic and environmentally friendly in both their production and application - they have a low embodied content and are safe to use when applying in their completed form. They are extremely energy efficient and help control humidity and temperature fluctuations - keeping you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

They are also non-dusting, mold and fade resistant and easily repairable. We supply the best adobe bricks and provide the best service in the industry.

Pause Play Close.Adobe is essentially a dried mud brick, combining the natural elements of earth, water, and sun. It is an ancient building material usually made with tightly compacted sand, clay, and straw or grass mixed with moisture, formed into bricks, and naturally dried or baked in the sun without an oven or kiln.

In the United States adobe is most prevalent in the hot, arid Southwest. Although the word is often used to describe an architectural style—"adobe architecture"—adobe is actually a building material. Adobe bricks have been used around the world, including near the muddy river areas of ancient Egypt and the ancient architecture of the Middle East. It is used today but also found in primitive architecture: mud bricks were used even before the grand ancient stone temples of Greece and Rome.

Construction methods and the composition of adobe—the recipe—vary according to climate, local customs, and the historical era. Adobe's strength and resilience vary with its water content: too much water weakens the brick. Today's adobe is sometimes made with an asphalt emulsion added to help with waterproofing properties. A mixture of Portland cement and lime may also be added.

In parts of Latin America, fermented cactus juice is used for waterproofing.

Although the material itself is naturally unstable, an adobe wall can be load bearing, self-sustaining, and naturally energy efficient. Adobe walls are often thick, forming a natural insulation from the environmental heat that creates and sustains the material. Today's commercial adobe is sometimes kiln-dried, although purists may call these "clay bricks. If the brick is mechanically compressed, the adobe mixture needs less moisture and the bricks can be used almost immediately, although purists may call these "compressed earth bricks.

In the United States, the word a dobe is said with the accent on the second syllable and the last letter pronounced, as in "ah-DOE-bee. It is a Spanish word that does not originate in Spain. Meaning "the brick," the phrase at-tuba comes from Arabic and Egyptian languages.

As Muslims migrated across northern Africa and into the Iberian Peninsula, the phrase was transformed into a Spanish word after the eighth century CE. The word entered our English language through the colonization of America by Spain after the 15th century.

The word is widely used in the southwestern United States and Spanish speaking countries. Like the building material itself, the word is ancient, going back to the creation of language—derivations of the word have been seen in ancient hieroglyphics.

Compressed Earth Blocks CEBs resemble adobe, except they usually do not contain straw or asphalt, and they generally are more uniform in size and shape. When adobe is NOT formed into bricks, it's called puddled adobe, and is used like the mud material in cob houses. The material is mixed and then thrown in lumps to gradually create an earthen wall, where the mixture dries in place.

In the Natural Building BlogDr. Adobe is resilient if well-maintained.I broached the following query to four licensed members, all in New Mexico. Two are adobe homebuilders, one builds both adobe and compressed earth block homes and one builds with rammed earth. The question: their cost per square foot to build a turn-key home; not a fancy, super custom one, just an ordinary house without a lot of bells and whistles.

He is a man of many years experience, and will tell you how quickly his good crew can lay up adobe walls. He has apprenticed under some of the Albuquerque North Valley builders of renown, such as Nat Kaplan. One rammed earth contractor also builds with frame. The contractor who builds with both compressed earth block and adobe has a solid background in frame and has branched out to adobe and CEB in recent years.

He builds over a larger, statewide territory and must coordinate a lot of supply and labor in his jobs. The fourth member has found a kind of niche for her rammed earth projects. She then customizes the project within that figure both in terms of square footage and any special features. Her team has designed some very low cost rammed earth homes one for Habitat for Humanity as well as the fanciest possible, all in the Las Cruces, NM area.

All About Adobe - Sustainable and Energy Efficient

Most adobe buildings are similar in appearance to cob and rammed earth buildings. Adobe is among the earliest building materials and is used throughout the world. Adobe bricks are rectangular prisms small enough that they can quickly air dry individually without cracking. They can be subsequently assembled, with the application of adobe mud to bond the individual bricks into a structure.

There is no standard size, with substantial variations over the years and in different regions. In dry climates, adobe structures are extremely durable, and account for some of the oldest existing buildings in the world. Adobe buildings offer significant advantages due to their greater thermal massbut they are known to be particularly susceptible to earthquake damage if they are not reinforced. The word can be traced from the Middle Egyptian c.

English borrowed the word from Spanish in the early 18th century, still referring to mudbrick construction. In more modern English usage, the term "adobe" has come to include a style of architecture popular in the desert climates of North America, especially in New Mexicoregardless of the construction method.

An adobe brick is a composite material made of earth mixed with water and an organic material such as straw or dung. The soil composition typically contains sandsilt and clay. Straw is useful in binding the brick together and allowing the brick to dry evenly, thereby preventing cracking due to uneven shrinkage rates through the brick.

No more than half the clay content should be expansive clayswith the remainder non-expansive illite or kaolinite. Too much expansive clay results in uneven drying through the brick, resulting in cracking, while too much kaolinite will make a weak brick.

Typically the soils of the Southwest United States, where such construction has been widely used, are an adequate composition. Adobe walls are load bearing, i.

Adobe construction should be designed so as to avoid lateral structural loads that would cause bending loads. The building codes require the building sustain a 1 g lateral acceleration earthquake load. Such an acceleration will cause lateral loads on the walls, resulting in shear and bending and inducing tensile stresses.

In addition to being an inexpensive material with a small resource cost, adobe can serve as a significant heat reservoir due to the thermal properties inherent in the massive walls typical in adobe construction. In climates typified by hot days and cool nights, the high thermal mass of adobe mediates the high and low temperatures of the day, moderating the temperature of the living space.

The massive walls require a large and relatively long input of heat from the sun radiation and from the surrounding air convection before they warm through to the interior.

After the sun sets and the temperature drops, the warm wall will continue to transfer heat to the interior for several hours due to the time-lag effect. Thus, a well-planned adobe wall of the appropriate thickness is very effective at controlling inside temperature through the wide daily fluctuations typical of desert climates, a factor which has contributed to its longevity as a building material. Thermodynamic material properties have significant variation in the literature.Adobe Construction Company is a fully-integrated construction company.
