If you search the used revolver sections in enough gun stores, you may be lucky enough to stumble upon a gem before an excited gun collector or target shooter has the chance to snatch it up. These high-quality American-made revolvers were the product of s innovations that made them stand out in the revolver world to this day.

Their unique story, legendary accuracy, and quality were no accident. In this position, he was also involved in research and design for other projects. While doing this, he happened upon a principle designed by a man named Karl Lewis. Lewis was an accomplished designer who had worked for many of the big-name manufacturers like Colt and Browningamong others.

He came up with an extremely durable and easy-to-use system to change out barrels on handguns. Lewis initially developed his modular system during his time at Browning and perfected it while working at High Standard on their target model handguns. This over shroud then had a retaining nut at the front end.

The barrel was first screwed into the frame, then the nut tightened to fully lock it down. This served to properly tighten the barrel onto the firearm and preserve accuracy by supporting the barrel at both ends.

He also moved the cylinder latch up to the crane instead of on the frame to increase locking strength. Taking a page from his successful design for the Colt Trooperhe opted to go with a coiled mainspring instead of a flat mainspring. This meant that the spring could be contained in a small protruding extension at the back of the frame instead of the large grip area which allowed for a much larger variety of grip sizes and shapes on the revolvers to suit different tastes and hand sizes.

With his future staked on the unique design, Wesson set up a company to produce and market the gun. To better attract customers to the unique feature of the new gun, Wesson decided to offer special barrel sets as an option for purchase. The factory set contained either a single barrel or any combination of barrels with multiple lengths.

The barrels were available initially in several lengths ranging from 2. The gun proved a hit with target shooters immediately but faced pushback from the general buying public for its exposed muzzle nut and odd flange on the barrel shroud. However, sales were still good enough to warrant more models being produced.

One could get these handguns with either fixed or adjustable rear sights, and replace the grips and barrel for easier usage. Consumers were still hesitant, so Lewis and Wesson went back to the drawing board for their Dan Wesson Model 14 and Model After some quick redesigning, they removed the flanges and recessed the muzzle nut, giving it a more standard appearance.

After these sales took off, the ease with which one could convert a target gun to a carry or duty gun proved to be the biggest selling point. Different calibers were introduced during production including 22 Long Rifle and a large-frame. Consumers liked them for their decent prices, extremely rugged construction, and innovative features. This made their M44 the lightest recoiling. The company struggled after the death of founder Dan Wesson inbut it continued to introduce new models and calibers occasionally until it finally went bankrupt in The revolvers would go in and out of production since then, being taken over by various outside interests and reintroduced as commemorative or special order revolvers.

Those who were not lucky enough to get the full barrel set, or who are just missing some, have been known to spend large amounts of money to obtain their rare missing barrels. Used examples that surface in the market are frequently snapped up at a premium, along with any other parts that turn up.

Their product focus is on a line of style automatic pistols. Unfortunately, Wesson's Model 15 is not a part of the lineup at this point. The corporate headquarters is in Norwich, New Yorkand the customer service and manufacturing plant is located in Norwich, New York.

Dan Wesson Firearms is known for its revolver expertise and for some types of ammunition it has introduced over the years. Daniel B. Dan Wesson Arms was incorporated inwith its headquarters and production located in a former school building in Monson, Massachusetts. Wesson was aware of gunmaker Karl Lewis' modular designs, proposed during Lewis' tenure with Browning and further refined during a period spent with High Standard.

Wesson signed a production agreement with Lewis and began setting up the necessary machining and manufacturing equipment.

Urging Lewis to prepare prototypes for display at major gun shows, Wesson began promoting the company, while working to build a sales and distribution network. The new Dan Wesson revolver proved extremely accurate, [ citation needed ] though sales were limited, in large part due to the gun's unorthodox appearance.

This new version of the revolver again demonstrated the inherent accuracy of the threaded barrel design, and the Model 15 and its successor Model became extremely popular with both civilian target shooters and hunters. Later, Dan Wesson offered revolvers in stainless steel as well. Despite the success of the revised design and new caliber offerings, Dan Wesson Arms experienced significant upheaval and ownership changes after Wesson's death in The original Monson facility and production equipment became outdated, and production costs of the gun reduced profits.

The company declared bankruptcy in The corporation was initially moved to Palmer Massachusetts, and the name was changed to Dan Wesson Firearms. Inpoor sales led to yet another bankruptcy, after which Bob Serva purchased the corporation and its assets, moving the group to Norwich, New Yorkwhere it is currently located.

Seeking to diversify its product line, the company introduced a popular series of high quality MA1 -type pistols in various calibers. Dan Wesson revolvers also went back into limited production, though this required a substantial investment in new CNC tooling and equipment to replace the old worn-out tooling.

Despite increased sales, the company faced further financial hardships, and in the company was purchased by the CZ Group's American branch. The double-action revolver design introduced by Dan Wesson was invented by Karl R. Lewis had previously invented an interchangeable barrel system for revolvers, and this system was incorporated into the Dan Wesson prototype.

While nearly all revolvers are constructed with a barrel screwed tightly to a frame which must be removed and installed by an experienced gunsmithLewis' idea was to house the barrel tube within a separate shroud secured by a nut at the muzzle, which places tension on the barrel and provides support at both ends of the barrel.

By unscrewing the muzzle nut, the shroud and barrel could be removed and replaced with different barrel lengths and shroud configurations.

The fact that the DW barrel is supported and placed under tension at both ends along with the ability to fine-tune barrel-cylinder gap resulted in markedly increased accuracy over conventional revolver designs.

Another difference in the new design was the placement of the cylinder release latch. Other revolvers place this latch on the frame, behind the cylinder. The Dan Wesson revolvers have the latch mounted on the cylinder crane, which was intended to increase the strength of the revolver by placing the locking mechanism at the point where the cylinder crane fits into the frame.

Another change from most other existing designs was the use of a coil mainspring, which Lewis had pioneered with his design of the Colt Trooper. Revolvers with flat mainsprings must have a metal framework to anchor one end, while the other contacts the hammer. This framework generally forms the primary shape of the handgrip, to which the stocks are attached.

The Dan Wesson design houses the coil mainspring inside a short extension of the frame, and the stock attaches to this extension with a screw inserted vertically through the bottom of the stock.

The lack of a steel frame outline permits a wider amount of grip sizes and styles, since any grip that can accept the short mainspring housing can be used.

The first interchangeable barrel revolvers produced were the Dan Wesson Models W8, W9, W11, and W12, all medium-frame size frame revolvers chambered in. The W8 and W11 had either a fixed rear sight, or a rear sight adjustable only for windage, while the W9 and W12 featured a rear sight fully adjustable for both windage and elevation.JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser. After all, that's all it made for as long as I can remember, in good times and in bad. And there were plenty of bad times. Dan Wesson struggled through much of its existence. Not surprisingly, quality rose and fell with the company's bottom line, and the company changed hands several times over the years.

The first s that rolled off the production line in were a product of the bad times. The main differences between the guns of old and today's Dan Wesson s are the quality of the individual parts and the hand-fitting that goes into each gun.

Overall Length: 8. Height: 5. Width: 1. Weight: 2. Every Dan Wesson pistol is built on a forged slide and cast frame, with the exception of the new Valor, which is built on a forged frame. Each frame and slide is run through Dan Wesson's state-of-the-art CNC machines, then sent to the polishing department to be de-burred. Those same folks then hand-fit the barrel, frame and slide.

Finally, they hand-radius every sharp edge, blend the rear of the slide and frame, sandblast every radius, polish the flats, and throat and polish the feed ramp.

This is all done by hand. Next, they stake the plunger tube, pin the ejector and thoroughly clean the gun before sending it to the assembly department. There, the small parts are polished and fitted to each pistol. Dan Wesson does not use any drop-in parts on its s, which is one reason they are so accurate and reliable. Every trigger job is tuned by hand with the use of a Power Custom Jig.

The extractor hooks are polished and tuned, and the match barrel bushing, oversized firing pin stop, grip safety, thumb safety and slide stop are all fitted. After assembly and function testing, each gun is test fired in the test tunnel before a final quality-control check. The parts used on today's Dan Wessons are also superior to those made in the pre-CZ days. Ed Brown makes the tactical thumb safety, slide stop and beavertail grip safety.
